Have you heard of the Rule of Thirds?

The other day, I had a few clients reach out and ask how to style some of their favorite pieces. I’m sure many of us experience this moment of…”I love this shirt but I look funny in it.” Well, friends there is a REASON it looks OFF and it probably has to do with the Rule of Thirds.

The Rule of Thirds was an idea developed by the ancient Greeks. They claimed that a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio is the most aesthetically pleasing division of spaces. Photographers and artists use this rule ALL. THE. TIME.

In fashion, this is often referred to as “the rule of thirds”. The key to this rule is to pay attnetion the the area between your ANKLE line and you NECK line. You’ll cut that up into 1/3s. When planning your outfits, create combinations that bring the eyes UP toward the neckline. Try to avoid items that cut you completely in half. Simple ways to do this include: adding a necklace or cropped jacket, tucking in a top, adding a belt, or rolling up sleeves. The point is accentuate the upper 1/3 to 2/3 of your body.

There you have it…the Rule of Thirds in a nutshell. Be sure to let me know if you’re still struggling pulling your look together – I am happy to help!

Happy experimenting friends!

Always,

Sara
